Personal Work - Arnold

Inbetween doing personal projects and the Jetpack Jones tutorials I realised that I have still up to this point been using Mental-Ray and that it is probably time to transition to Arnold with Maya 2018.

The renders turn out very nice and the rendering tools also make life easier, the new Arnold-render viewer in Maya 2018 helps.

The use of new Arnold-specific shaders and lights is a bit perturbing as it means that my knowledge of using other shaders will need to be updated significantly. I look forward to learning more about it however.

Jetpack Jones - Completed head mesh

The finished head for the Jetpack Jones model, this is the first step on the journey to helping me get a better hold of human models in Maya.

Showreel - Genghis the Space Pug

Genghis Character Showreel from Max Ashby on Vimeo.

My first character showreel featuring Genghis, this has been a while in the making and features footage from "Genghis" along with other work done later on. Later on I will focus on updating this showreel by adding more technical clips of Genghis like his rigging and modelling. I also want to create a human character showreel.

Personal Work - Genghis and Morpheus

Morpheus/Genghis Stroke from Max Ashby on Vimeo.

An animation of Genghis and the Morpheus from 11 Second Club, I used this to try and brush up on some animation skills as well as provide some content for my current showreel. This was created because after reading a few showreel guides online one common piece of advice was to be more original with animation pieces and avoid the usual walk cycle or run cycle content.

Morpheus is copyright Josh Burton.

Personal Work: Plasma Sandwich

Plasma Sandwich

Another quick project made in Maya that was also about continuing experimenting with mia_material_x/light_surface plugins.

It was difficult to try and eliminate the fuzziness in the purple glow without bumping up the render time to the extreme, even to the point of crashing Maya. I’ll try and work more on this in the future.

A plasma sandwich seemed like a whimsical idea more than anything, that was the motivation behind it’s creation.

Personal Work: Ammo Box

A quick little 3D model done in a few hours; a futuristic ammo box containing bullets. Something that evolved from a sketch, more of a quick exercise in 3D realisation of a 2D drawing.

The modelling was the easy part, the hours where spent in creating the glowing effect which was eventually the result of a mia_material_x shader. It also took a few render passes combined together in Photoshop to get the text and bullets to show up properly inside the box.

Personal Work: Desert Trek

Some simple environment work, I'm pretty pleased with this, it's come out quite good. The idea of exploring strange planets and outer worlds is appealling. The hurricane was a separate image that I made flat and then warped around the planet, the remainder was made in a single image.
