Freelance Work : Animated promotional video

Sheffield DJ Mason Maynard from Max Ashby on Vimeo.

A recently completed piece of freelance work; an animated promotional video for a music venue in Sheffield. The video features the venue's logo and the DJ's name and was made in Adobe After Effects along with Adobe Photoshop. The "Mason Maynard" logo was provided by the client.

The client request 4 other videos featuring names of the other DJs.

I like the style of this video, the black and white lines look quite cool, the client was nice :) and a far away deadline meant low stress.

Personal Work : Exo Organ orthograph

A side on orthograph for an upcoming project, an actual Exo-Organ in the flesh. This will be a project once again combining Maya 2017 and Maya 2018 for different rendering effects.

Personal Work : Exo-Organ container

A container for an artificial exo-organ, designed for combat usage.

Another project dealing with Mia_Light_Surface textures, except this time I also combined it with Arnold Standard_Surface shaders to give the container a more realistic metallic appearance. The Mia textures where added in Maya 2016 while the Arnold textures added in Maya 2018 and then composited together in Photoshop.

Personal Work : Picking up objects in Maya

Pick_Up_MORPHEUS_2 from Max Ashby on Vimeo.

One thing I haven't tried out in Maya is having a character pick up an object, simple actions in real life can be deceptively complex in 3D. I found a tutorial on Youtube and used the Morpheus rig to create this small animation.

The tutorial proposes constraining the point and orient values of an object to locators; one locator is then parented to the hand of the character, the other on the surface where the object rests. The locators are also constrained to the object's pivot, this is important to remember particularly with objects like swords or poles as their orientation and position can go awry if the pivots do not correspond correctly with the locator positions. It is possible to use multiple locators.

In the course of this I also found a method of aligning the pivots of one object to another.

I believe that this is a pretty good start to using objects with characters in Maya, the tutorial itself wasn't too difficult, the challenge lies in the finer workings of the pivots and locators.

Personal Work : Fracture

More personal work that has taken quite a while to do. I still need to work on my shading techniques.

An artificial planet breaks apart with pieces of it's hull landing elsewhere, a nice little black hole warms the sky.

Personal Work : Cross testing

Cross_Multi_Test.mp4 from Max Ashby on Vimeo.

A sample of experimental work used in the course of a commission. It features a simple cross design made in Photoshop that was animated in After-Effects, quite simple to make without any real special knowledge.

Personal Work : Arnold physical sky

The Physical Sky tutorial for Arnold in Maya 2018. This is a good first step towards making better skies and sunlight effects.
